DMZ Comic Book Optioned

February 5, 2014

One more report can be added to the recent flurry of announced television adaptations of comic book properties: as revealed by Deadline, SyFy has ordered a pilot for an ongoing DMZ series, based on the Vertigo series created by Brian Wood and Riccardo BurchielliMad Men executive producers Andre and Maria Jacquemetton are said to be attached to the project, along with Gravity producer David Heyman.

Running for 72 issues from 2005 to 2011, DMZ follows the story of Matty Roth, a photojournalist living in a future Manhattan which, after a second civil war, has been declared a demilitarized zone — or DMZ — by the United States government, leaving the island all but completely cut off from the rest of the nation and subsequently in squalor. The series was co-created by writer Wood, who was recently at the center of a widespread discussion of harassment and the overall treatment of women professionals in the comics industry, following accusations of misconduct on his part.

While Marvel has notably dominated the big screen in recent years, Vertigo parent DC Comics is doing its best to be the leader on the small screen. DMZ represents the fifth DC series announced to be in development for television in recent months, following The Flash, Gotham, iZombie, and Constantine. Notably, it’s also the third Vertigo title to achieve such a status — though Constantine is now under the auspices of DC’s superhero line, the character’s longtime home Hellblazer was a Vertigo title for 20 years, and is still primarily associated with that line.
