Wake The Dead Comic Book Optioned

January 25, 2011 Nearly eight years after it was first optioned for the screen, the Steve Niles horror comic Wake the Dead is rising out of the movie development grave.

The Los Angeles Times confirmed with Niles that Guns N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver guitarist-turned-film producer Slash and Rob Eric will produce the movie adaptation with Jay Russell (Criminal Macabre) set to direct.

Slash recently announced that he’d teamed with Scout Productions to form Slasher Films, whose goal is to make horror films that pay homage to the classics of the ’70s and ’80s.

Wake the Dead is a contemporary take on Mary Shelley’s lit classic Frankenstein, where Victor Frankenstein is reimagined as a medical student who reanimates the dead.

“We want to recapture the quality of horror like they made them in the ’70s,” Niles told the Times. “Horror where you care about the characters and story. With Wake the Dead, Jay Russell, Slash and I hope to make a horror movie that sticks with you long after you’ve seen it.”
